Bromeliad | Guzmania sp

Bromeliad | Guzmania sp Care:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light; east or west-facing windows are ideal. Direct sun will scorch the leaves.

  • Watering: Water the central tank (rosette) weekly, keeping it about

full. Use rainwater or filtered water to prevent mineral buildup. Empty and refresh the cup regularly to prevent stagnation. Keep the potting medium only slightly moist, as overwatering causes root rot.

  • Humidity: Thrives in 60%+ humidity. Mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place in a bathroom or kitchen to increase moisture.

  • Temperature: Thrives in 18-27ºC and should be protected from temperatures below 15ºC.

  • Soil and Potting: Use a fast-draining mix, such as orchid bark or a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and pine bark. They have small root systems and prefer being slightly pot-bound.

  • Fertiliser: Generally not needed, but a weak liquid fertiliser (half-strength) can be applied to the soil or misted on foliage during spring/summer.

  • Flowering and Lifespan: The colourful "flower" is actually bracts that last 3-4 months. The parent plant will slowly die after blooming but will produce "pups" at the base that can be propagated.
